Makeup Design: Phantom of the Opera

These pieces were created for BYU's production of The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The pieces were made to reflect the time period, the late 1800s, and to suit their characters: a chorus member and stage hand of the Opera Populaire. Both characters necessitated versatility in their pieces, as they were called upon to play a variety of characters.

The wig was styled by combining elements of several hairstyles found in research, including back combing, curls pinned into a large bun, and tight spiral curls.

The mustache was styled based upon an illustration from the time period selected by the makeup designers for the show. The facial hair involves three pieces: the mustache and two side burns. All three pieces were hand ventilated and styled.

This facial hair also provided added versatility for the actor: he wore all three pieces together when playing the auctioneer at the beginning of the show, removed the mustache to play a stage hand, and then removed the side burns to play Passarino in the Don Juan scene.

I also styled a pair of eyebrows for Monsuier Andre. Unfortunately, the actor portraying the character had an adverse reaction attempting to glue eyebrows on top of his own eyebrows, and the ventilated pieces were replaced with makeup. However, the ventilated brows were used for the promotional pictures for the show.
